I Want Babies!

Sometimes things come out of my mouth before I think of how it might sound to others. 'Others' as in the other people in the check out line at Safeway this afternoon.

A few days ago I was chatting with one of the docs who knows I am about to start medical school and I was lamenting the fact that I have never really had any ICU or maternity experience as a nurse, and how I wished I had before starting my medical degree.

He told me that while I am here he'll let me catch any babies that arrive when he is on call. SWEET! He's really nice and keen to teach so I have been quite excited about this prospect. Last night he was on call and we did our best to not call him in for things we could deal with on our own so he got to sleep most of the shift.

So today I was getting coffees and he spotted me, came up to me in line and said

"Thanks for last night, you were so GOOD to me! Really, it was what I needed...had a great sleep too."

"Oh yeah, no problem", I said..."we had fun, that is what it is all about right?"

"Cool, ok well I am on call this weekend so maybe we'll see if we can make something work" he says as he's walking away--referring to me getting some OB experience.

"Yeah, thanks! Just don't forget that I WANT BABIES!!" I said over the din as he disappeared down the aisle.

As I turn back to face the line of people the lady in front of me is staring at me with an odd expression--a raised eyebrow and pursed lip. I think--what did I just yell out? I replay the conversation in my head--IDIOT! I wanted to explain--no no no, I don't want HIS baby--he's got some of his own, and I don't even WANT to have babies, and no we were talking about work, and no I am not really interested or having an affair with one of the local pillars of this small community...er...ah....oh forget it.

Yeah. Smooth. Really smooth.

P.S BINY I know you are going to have a field day with this... :)

Haha. Best "crowd silence" moment I've heard of in a long time. Being able to catch a few babies is an awesome privilege. I know what you mean about maternity and ICU though....but there are chances when you are in med school.
ICU nurses are freaking awesome IMHO, I've learned so much from them, so it certainly is something to look forward to even if you don't get time in before setting down to med school.

Yeah, it was one of those crickets- chirping-record-scratching moments...but hilarious even to me at the time. I have a long list of super awkward public moments due to my inability to think and speak at the same time.

True, I am looking forward to those chances in med school--I just think it'd be nice to have some hands-on time before I am in the hot seat. I have done 2 shifts in the ICU here but my patients have been really stable and the only thing I've had to run other than saline was amiodarone. So not super stressful.

I agree, ICU nurses (especially the ones that become ER nurses later) are awesome. They are usually super smart and chill during codes...plus you can get them to interpret any lab results. :)

I suppose BINY heard you all the way down in NYC and is still trying to control his laughter long enough to respond. This might take a while. :-)

Have you considered psychiatry as a specialty? You could write the Psych Blog to balance out your Asystole blog. Maybe a subtitle of Even a blind squirrel . . . Not exactly PC, but that has never been one of my vices. :-)

BB-You know it! Small town! :) It also doesn't help that this guy is...how I can put this professionally...not hard to look at. hahaha

Rogue--indeed, very PC! Yeah, sometimes I feel like I would like to start a completely anonymous psyche blog called "my daily interactions with passive-aggressive-cluster B-megalomaniacs" and just write stories about some of the stuff health care workers say and do during a shift. Kinda a long title I guess! :)

For what it's worth, it's starting to sound like your suppressed "urge" is starting to percolate out of your subconscious.

And you're making it too easy for me...so, I'll leave it at that.

LOL - Smooth EBSCO... Reminds of that time....
KIDDING. I couldn't do that to you, (mostly because you have too much dirt on me).
If you want to catch a baby or two, you could go work at the remand centre. They have standing orders for the nurses to deliver the babies. SAFETY FIRST in Forensic Nursing, right?

BINY--I know, I know. It's like taking candy from a...sh*t! I am a woman obsessed. It is like the "Telltale heart", only it is the "Telltale Ovaries"...tick...tick..hahhaahhah

Really. No. Babies. No. Way. Stop.

Keet--Reminds you of a time? There were no 'times'!!! I was always so well behaved as a teenager and young adult...I don't know what you are talking about. ;)

Yeah, awesome mat experience at the Remand--nothing like the joy of incarcerated mothers giving birth to crack babies! Oh...is that politically incorrect?
