The Edible Woman*

This post could also be called, "I Get By With a Little Help From My Friends".

It's been a tough couple of weeks. I am feeling rather disconnected from the world, living in a pseudo-reality of essay-writing-cramming-reading-sleeping-feeling-sorry-for-myself.

It is part of the challenges of living in a foreign country; not having the people, things, and rituals you normally revert to when things get tough. Granted I am blessed here with a slowly growing net of people willing to help hold me up, namely my boyfriend and some of my close classmates. A few days ago my good buds, Ryan and Mike showed up at the door with quite a surprise (you may remember Mike from his astounding artwork advertising my arctic nursing presentation in March).

It was the edible woman. If there is one fool proof way to impress me and make me laugh it is with chocolate (and simulated bowels made of glossetts and saran wrap, apparently).

I thought I should include a closer image to highlight the black lungs, heart, kidneys, gallbladder (green jellybean), bladder, thyroid, and 'corn' in small intestine. I think it was a most impressive artistic/comedic endeavor. And if this doesn't give some comfort to the general population that these are the doctors of tomorrow, I don't know what would.

It definitely made my week. Gnom, gnom, gnom...

I am lucky to have such a wonderful budding community of friends here, at home, and the virtual one of the blogosphere. Thank you for all the kind comments, emails, and edible presents lately! It means a lot.

She smilingly begins her Health Law and Ethics paper...

*With a nod to my first and maybe favorite Margaret Atwood novel, The Edible Woman.

Well I shared some of it too...

You are the only other person I've met who has actually heard of this book. I LOVE Margaret Atwood. That book was one of her best.

Is that poo, er I mean CHOCOLATE in the intestines?

OMDG--HA! Random! *You* are also the only person I know that has heard of the book (other than my author Grandmother).

Yes that is CHOCOLATE in the intestines, actually a delightful mix of malteesers, glossettes, and caramel milk duds. :)

That is just so sweet, hilarious and nerdy all in one. I'm glad to hear you've got a good network over there.

I picked up The Edible Woman at my local library back in the day and the first thing I thought of when I saw the title was an image of a woman made out of chocolate, but your edible woman is too effin awesome! Mike has some serious artistic skillz - if medicine doesn't work out for him, he has a solid backup plan!

NN-Thanks for the giant virtual hugs.

Actually your take on it pretty much describes M & R as well: sweet, nerdy, and hilarious. Hence why they are in my circle of trust! hahahah

Maha--I know--Mike has some mad art skills. I'll pass on that you are impressed! :)

Lol that is so great. I am impressed (and perhaps the tiniest bit grossed out, but mostly impressed for sure ;). My BFF's have definitely carried me through some rough times the past two years with little care packages, daily emails, free lunches and endless patience listening to my Med School woes. I'm so glad you've got some good (super-creative) pals to carry you through too.

Ninja--Medical school definitely does test every relationship and coping mechanism!

It's amazing how some people just really seem to know how to help get you through. You really learn who the committed people in your life are because anyone who puts up with med school whining is a true friend/partner. ;)

Or maybe a masochist...

it´s pretty good to know that you have such supporting people around you, I´m sure that´s because you deserve it...:D

Or.... maybe they put up with you because you're awesome, and they realize that despite the bitching, moaning, and whining, they're lucky to have you.

;-)

GEN---Well I figure I must be doing something right! :)

Either that or I just have a very good homing device that locates amazing people in every town I live in!

OMDG--Hahahha, I'll take that as a compliment! Aw shucks. Some days I think I must be a real pain in the ass to be around. :)

I didn't have much of a chance to comment before, but that's awesome and terribly creative! I hope I wind up knowing folks so artistically inclined. heh

When I saw this link today, it reminded me of this post. Not so edible but it made me wonder if there isn't a new internet meme about to overtake the world.
