Desperately Seeking New Music

I need a serious injection of new music for my running mix.

Happily my knee has been feeling 100% (ok, maybe more like 97%) for the past 2 months, which means that I've been very slooooowwwlly and carefully getting back into my running regime.

YAY!

That only took a year of sports med docs, physios, orthos and massage therapists all giving me different advice (and telling me different diagnoses).

So the running is good but my music is stale and since it is January it means I will have more time to ponder the universe on the track while the 'resolutionists' take up the weight room. Like today at the gym I waited half an hour for the gang of 17 year old males (seriously people, who weight trains in a group larger than 2??) to free up a bench. Argh.

Anyway, this is the current mix in case any of you are in the same boat, any suggestions greatly appreciated! (No laughing at some of the songs).

Hotel Yorba--White Stripes
The Waker--Widespread Panic
Fidelity--Regina Spektor
I Gotta Feeling--Black Eyed Peas*
Stayin' Alive--N-Trance
Praise You--Fatboy Slim
Single Ladies--Beyoncé
SexyBack--Timberlake
Honey--Moby
Rich Girl--Gwen Stefani
Couch Surfer--Bran Van 3000
Black Sheep Mix--Z-Trip and Radar
A Punk--Vampire Weekend
Freedom '90--George Michael
Nothin' Better to Do--The Chordials
Time Bomb--Rancid
Know Your Enemy--Green Day
Pump It--Black Eyed Peas
Maneater--Nelly Furtado
Bug Powder Dust--Bomb the Bass
Where is the Love--Black Eyed Peas

Thanks to Ann Marie for the hand-me-down ipod and Cathy Lee for a great compilation that contributed to the set.

*If you need an intervals song--this is the best one evah.

Well, I don't know if you like Lily Allen, but I do. It's usually pretty peppy too.

If you want to find new songs that are like the ones you already like, I'd highly recommend Pandora dot com. Create a "station" of some music you already like. Playing "Lily Allen" radio, I have found I like Regina Spektor, Kate Bush, Amy Winehouse, and a whole host of others.

But you probably already knew this since I always arrive late to this sort of thing.

Sweet-haven't heard of Lily Allen but will check her out! Also, someone once mumbled something to me about Pandora but I never investigated it. Will do! Thanks!

"resolutionists". Hehe. I excercised on Jan 1, but then I did on Dec 31 and 30. Not every day of every week, but most. But there certainly were a lot more people out there on the 2nd (once those hangovers had worn off I reckon).

SGT--Thanks for the suggestions! I've resorted to listening to Iron & Wine because of my extreme boredom with the running mix. This has definitely not been helping me get to my target heart rate! hahaha

I like The Fabulous Poodles, though they haven't done anything new in over 20 years.

Grump--I thought you were jerking my chain with the suggestion--but I figured there would be no way of knowing I fell for it...so I searched and found!

They ROCK!

Hilarious.

I know this is a rather late comment, but I just discovered your wonderful blog. I truly appreciate you taking the time to write.

I am an avid runner and usually run to electro, but might I suggest:
Bag Raiders, MGMT, Midnight Juggernaughts, Lady Hawk, Justice, and the Presets.

Best regards,

You should be able to sample much of it on Youtube or Myspace. I really like Bag Raiders - Fun Punch (great video) and Shooting Stars. Midnight J - Dystopia was my favorite album from last year.

The Clash are great for working out. Massive Attack's Safe from Harm. Cannonball Adderley (such as Work Song and Jive Samba) is slightly slower (for keeping my heart rate below 100% of my calculated maximum).

Del Shannon Runaway segue to Tom Petty Running Down a Dream has a running theme and a good beat. Or the Bonnie Raitt version, in stead of Del Shannon.

Shivaree, Cowboy Junkies, 10,000 Maniacs/Natalie Merchant have a bunch of great songs, but Goodnight Moon and Thundercats (both by Shivaree) are the ones I tend to listen to while working out.

Sarah McLachlan's Possession.

Unfortunately, my Blackberry has decided that I need to workout in silence, or to nothing more than the sound of my breathing, so I will be trying some alternative methods of providing a sweat soundtrack.

I guess I'm showing my age - I don't think that any song I mentioned is from this century.
