Is there a doctor on board?

So a few days ago I delivered a baby on board my KLM flight from Amsterdam to Calgary. It was one of the most surreal, frightening, exciting, unbelievable experiences in my life.

Full story to follow soon!! :))

ULTRA COOL! I'm glad you did it. I was the one hiding in economy pretending to read Cosmo.

Well done!

(I fly quite frequently and have never had to help on a plane, yet my non-medical friends seem to see medical emergencies onboard constantly!)

Wow wow! Looking forward to reading your story. I'm a third year and on labor and delivery now and love it! I'm struggling with choosing between family and OB, your stories however have definitely been feeding the fire for rural family med. all the best to you as you continue your residency!

Wow - go you!! I actually saw it on the news before I had even seen your blog post!..and am now thinking you must have been the amazing doctor that went in the ambulance...?? Hope I'm not ruining your future story.. Poor lady..how scary would that be...but SO awesome you were there, lucky lady and baby - I know you only for your blog posts...and I don't think many will disagree when I say she could not have been in better hands...on or off the ground!:-) Wickedly cool story, you must be buzzing!

Love it. Nothing like a baby delivery, but I had a passenger on a Southwest flight who started getting SOB with leg pain. Many differential diagnosis there. Long story short I was doing vital signs and assessments while talking to a doctor on the ground.

There was an item about it in my hospital's newsletter! Apparently, a doctor and a nurse from the VU medical center in Amsterdam provided assistance by telephone? (They didn't mention your identity, just that there was a doctor on board who didn't have much experience with obstetrics).

I can scan it if you like :).

And of course, everyone is dying to hear your side from the story... :)

I delivered my niece in the back of her parents car while the entire emergency department stood around and watched. I hadn't delivered a baby for 10 yrs. What a rush. My sister-in-law is so happy that I was so calm (hahaha).
That baby you delievered is going to have the best birth story ever!
Congrats.

just read through a handful of your blog posts from the start of your journey to where you are now. right now, I'm where you were all those years ago...beginning preparation for the MCAT after 5 years of nursing (not to mention scared but determined to finally take this first step). But I just want tell you that your journey (the ups/downs good/bad) has been truly inspiring! thank you so much for posting! :)
